NORFOLK BLUES FESTIVAL

The "Norfolk Music Association" is a mock organization for youth and young adults, ages 16 to 21, who promote music and arts in the Tidewater area. I have designed the branding for the N.M.A. In addition, I have created the advertisements and the event collateral for the annual Blues Festival at Town Point Park: a brochure that includes a detachable ticket and event schedule, two outdoor posters, and t-shirt designs. Evoking the classic period of Blues music, the styles of the posters I have created are influenced by the 1920’s Blues era and pay direct homage to various designs of the time period. Starting with a tan base, and layering the images with a blue monochrome color scheme, the drawn musicians dominate the page, while the type choices are complimenting. The repetition of the light blues allow the eye to move comfortably around the compositions. The abberation of the imagery, coupled with their large sizes, has stylistic similarities to the advertising design for the Blues in the 1920’s.

JAZZ MUSIC FESTIVAL

Rhythm, repetition, variety, composition, and syncopation. Design and Music use the same language and concepts. I have created Jazz Festival event collateral for the Atlanta Lovers of Music Association; a brochure, t-shirt design, entry tickets and two outdoor posters. Jazz is often characterized by improvisations and deliberate deviations of a central motif. In my designs, I created a similar effect. Using red, yellow and blue my imagery creates the illusion of vibrations. Triangular shapes form musicians, repeating patterns. The placement of the type serves as the syncopation and the imagery as the rhythm. I’ve repeated the same colors and using them in a variety of different ways. I used purple for one letter in my title text to slightly interrupt the arrangement of typography. In jazz music it is said that the musician never plays the same notes twice. This ideology is reflected in my typography. By overlapping the text I mirrored the opacity changes that are in the musician, creating unity within in the composition.
